What kind of business do you have at home?
I’m an international business growth consultant for small and mid-sized businesses,
an author, coach and speaker.
What did you do before you started a home business?
I spent twenty years in management; I helped many firms introduce new products,
enter markets and develop new distribution channels. I also designed new pricing,
compensation and sales incentive plans as well as restructured and staffed
marketing, sales and customer service organizations.
What was your biggest challenge in starting your home business?
My biggest challenge was learning to run the administrative side while trying to
market myself.
What has been your biggest challenge staying in business?
Reinventing myself to keep fresh and stay compelling to my clients.
What do you love about working from home?
I love the freedom to do what I want, when I want, and deciding how to get things
done. It’s nice to be home when my daughter comes home from school.
What do you dislike about it?
The only time I gripe is when I’m on the phone and I hear a neighbor’s lawn mower!
How do you do to inspire or motivate yourself everyday?
I schedule big family vacations to work around and pay for!
How do you separate home life from your work life?
I don’t and therefore I get so much more out of both the business and my time with
the family.
How do you keep family/home/work all in balance?
You learn to juggle and realize its all about getting there on your terms and not by
other people telling you that you should.
Where is your office in your home?
There’s three places I work from,
1) living room for informal meetings;
2) large basement conference room for
the formal meetings with video
conferencing capabilities and 3) out on
the deck overlooking the pond with
a little waterfall, of course weather
permitting.
What is your daily routine?
I don’t have one, and that’s fine with me.
What is your biggest (or proudest) achievement so far?
I’ve helped my clients grow by $100,000, thus having a $35 million impact on the
economy. My company, Birol Growth Consulting has won four Weatherhead 100
Awards as Northeast Ohio's fastest growing single-employee business and 34th
fastest growing company of any size and was also recognized by Inside Business
Magazine, and Team NEO which awarded me the NEO Success Award in 2005 and
2007.
What are you working on right now to grow your business?
I’m writing my 6th book, coming out with my new Get ThereSM program. I also
just came out with a brand new Web site and blog.
What advice can you give about starting a home business?
It’s a wonderful experience as long as you find the discipline, maximize your
strengths and outsource weaknesses.
If you had to do it all over again, what would you do (or not do)?
I should have focused more nationally and internationally a lot soon than I did.
What do you do for fun when you’re not working?
I have a travel addiction, which my wife and daughter enjoy, too! Soon, I’ll have
been to all seven continents and traveled to over 60 countries.
